College Essay Intensives

Expert guidance and feedback. Your schedule. Your own voice.

Writing a strong university application essay takes more than polish. Students need time to identify meaningful experiences, understand what each prompt is really asking, develop ideas, and revise their writing into something that sounds genuinely like them.

Pembroke’s online essay courses provide a structured way to do that work—with expert guidance, practical instruction, and the flexibility to work asynchronously.

Each course breaks the writing process into manageable stages, from brainstorming and reflection through drafting, revision, and final polish. Students work independently through lessons, exercises, examples, and writing prompts, allowing them to move at a pace that fits their schedule while still following a clear process.

The goal is not to produce a formulaic “perfect essay.” It is to help students develop the ideas, structure, and confidence to tell their own stories effectively.

Common App Intensive: Personal Statement and Activities List (6 weeks)

Find the story only you can tell.

The Common App Personal Statement gives students an opportunity to show colleges something that cannot be captured by a transcript or activity list: how they think, what they value, and how their experiences have shaped them.

This course takes students through the process of developing a compelling personal statement from the ground up. Students explore potential topics, identify meaningful moments and patterns, develop an authentic narrative, and learn how to revise for specificity, reflection, voice, and structure.

The course is designed to help students avoid common pitfalls such as résumé-style essays, generic life lessons, excessive explanation, or writing what they think admissions officers want to hear. It also helps students maximize their activities list section of the Common App.

Students finish with a substantially developed personal statement and a clearer understanding of how to communicate their experiences authentically. They will also have a detailed yet concise activities list that meets the Common App’s strict requirements.

Best for: Students applying through the Common Application who want a structured, independent approach to developing their personal statement.

Cohorts: May 1, June 1, July 1, August 1, September 1, October 1, November 1

Supplemental Essays Intensive: 3 Schools

Turn the rest of your application into a conversation.

Supplemental essays ask students to answer a wide range of questions: Why this university? Why this major? What community would you contribute to? What experiences have shaped you? What would you bring to campus?

Because these essays are short, every word matters.

This course helps students develop a systematic approach to the supplemental essay writing process. Students learn how to interpret different prompt types, generate ideas efficiently, research universities thoughtfully, identify specific points of connection, and write concise responses that add something new to their application.

Rather than repeating the personal statement or listing accomplishments, students learn how to use supplemental essays to reveal different dimensions of their interests, experiences, and intellectual life.

The course is particularly useful for students managing multiple applications who need a process for producing thoughtful, individualized essays without starting from scratch each time.

Best for: Students applying to multiple U.S. universities who want a repeatable process for planning and writing supplemental essays.

Cohorts: July 15, August 15, September 15, October 15, November 15

Common App + Supplementals Combined Intensive (7 weeks)

A condensed, combined version of the Common App and Supplementals courses for students in a time crunch.

Cohorts: July 15, August 15, September 15, October 15, November 15

UCAS Intensive (4 weeks)

Build an academic case for your chosen course.

The UCAS personal statement requires a different approach from the U.S. college essay.

Rather than centering primarily on personal storytelling, students need to demonstrate their academic interests, preparation, motivation, and readiness for their chosen field of study.

This course guides students through the process of developing a focused, academically grounded statement. Students explore their intellectual interests, connect their coursework and experiences to their intended subject, identify relevant reading and activities, and learn how to reflect meaningfully on what they have learned.

The course is designed for students applying to universities in the UK who need to communicate not only what they have done, but why their academic experiences have prepared them for further study.

Students finish with a coherent framework for presenting their academic interests and preparation in a focused and persuasive way.

Best for: Students applying through UCAS who want guidance developing a subject-focused personal statement.

Cohorts: June 1, July 1, August 1, September 1, October 1, November 1, December 1

UC Intensive: Personal Insight Questions and Activities List (6 weeks)

Show the person behind the application.

The University of California’s Personal Insight Questions ask students to reflect on their experiences, perspectives, accomplishments, challenges, and contributions.

Because students select multiple questions, the challenge is not simply writing four good essays. It is deciding which stories to tell—and how the essays can work together to present a fuller picture of the student.

This course guides students through brainstorming, prompt selection, story development, drafting, and revision. Students learn how to move beyond simply describing what happened and instead show what they learned, how they think, and how their experiences have influenced them. It also helps students maximize their activities list section of the UC application.

Particular attention is given to specificity, reflection, voice, and making each response meaningfully distinct. The result should be a collection of responses that feels cohesive without becoming repetitive—and that gives the reader a more complete sense of the student. They will also have a detailed yet concise activities list that meets the UC application’s strict requirements.

Best for: Students applying to University of California campuses who want a structured approach to developing their Personal Insight Questions.

Cohorts: May 1, June 1, July 1, August 1, September 1, October 1,

How the Courses Work

01 — Learn

Short, focused lessons introduce the principles behind effective application writing and explain what each type of essay is designed to accomplish.

02 — Explore

Guided exercises and brainstorming activities help students identify experiences, ideas, interests, and stories worth developing.

03 — Draft

Students work through a structured drafting process rather than trying to produce a polished essay in one sitting.

04 — Revise

Students receive detailed feedback and learn how to strengthen specificity, reflection, organization, voice, and clarity through multiple rounds of revision.

05 — Polish

The final stage focuses on clarity, concision, mechanics, and making sure the student’s finished response sounds like the student.

Designed for Student Schedules

The courses are online and asynchronous, so students can work when and where it makes sense for them.

There are no required weekly live sessions. Students can pause, return to previous lessons, and spend additional time on the stages where they need it most. The structure provides independence without leaving students wondering what to do next.

More Than Essay Editing

Pembroke’s courses are designed to teach students how to approach application writing, not simply how to make a particular essay sound better. Students learn a process they can apply across their applications:

Reflect → Identify → Develop → Draft → Revise → Refine

That process helps students become more thoughtful writers and more confident communicators while preserving ownership of their work.
